TOPIC:         Stretch Broken Carbon Fiber (SBCF) in composite structures

ABSTRACT:

Over the last few years, Albany Engineered Composites (AEC) has worked on a Hexcel led team to demonstrate the viability of Stretch Broken Carbon Fiber (SBCF) in composite structures.  Hexcel has been working on the Stretch Breaking process since the early 1990’s.  While any carbon tow can be used as feedstock, this work focused on IM-7 carbon fiber.

AEC’s focus for this research effort was 3D wovens, Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), and forming using mechanical pressure.

To date, AEC has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of Hexcel’s SBCF to:

·         Replace continuous fiber in 3D preforms without major alterations to the weaving set-up and processing parameters

·         Form both inner & outer stiffeners of typical aircraft frames while maintaining fiber alignment in radial & longitudinal directions without darting

·         Be utilized in Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) for both epoxy and BMI resins

·         Tailored woven preforms

·         Currently investigating bead stiffened webs to improve structural efficiency through geometry

The presentation shall cover AEC’s efforts as well as some of the testing data, courtesy of Hexcel.
